Perceptual scales for chromatic and luminance blur in noise textures.

چکیده
We have measured the relative perceptual scales for chromatic and luminance blur in dense textures comprised of color and luminance Gabors, using a modification of the method of paired comparisons. We find that the rate at which perceived blur grows with physical blur, when normalized to 1.0 for luminance, is 0.2 for red-green and 0.06 for blue-yellow blur. It is argued that the relatively severely compressed perceptual scales for red-green and blue-yellow blur are a contributary factor to the observation that when the color but not luminance layer of an image of a natural scene is blurred, there is little or no impression of blur (Wandell, 1995).

Neural adjustments to chromatic blur.
The perception of blur in images can be strongly affected by prior adaptation to blurry images or by spatial induction from blurred surrounds. These contextual effects may play a role in calibrating visual responses for the spatial structure of luminance variations in images. We asked whether similar adjustments might also calibrate the visual system for spatial variations in color. Observers a...
متن کاملLuminance cues constrain chromatic blur discrimination in natural scene stimuli.
Introducing blur into the color components of a natural scene has very little effect on its percept, whereas blur introduced into the luminance component is very noticeable. Here we quantify the dominance of luminance information in blur detection and examine a number of potential causes. We show that the interaction between chromatic and luminance information is not explained by reduced acuity...
متن کاملNon-Fourier Information in Bandpass Noise Patterns
Random dot patterns and white-noise luminance textures are widely used in psychophysical experiments to study low-level visual processes. Because these noise patterns are broadband, bandpass filtered versions are employed to limit their frequency content. It is not recognized, however, that bandpass noise patterns have amplitude-modulation (AM) components. The AM signal is not present in the Fo...
متن کاملAbsence of a chromatic linear motion mechanism in human vision
We have investigated motion mechanisms in central and perifoveal vision using two-frame random Gabor kinematograms with isoluminant red-green or luminance stimuli. In keeping with previous results, we find that performance dominated by a linear motion mechanism is obtained using high densities of micropatterns and small temporal intervals between frames, while nonlinear performance is found wit...
متن کاملVisual discomfort and natural image statistics.
Images with excessive energy at medium spatial frequencies (Fernandez and Wilkins, 2008 Perception 37 1098-1113), or that have high color contrast and little or no luminance contrast (Wilkins et al, 2008 Perception 37 Supplement, 144-145) appear uncomfortable or aversive and can induce headaches in hypersensitive observers. Such stimuli are uncharacteristic of natural images, and we examined wh...
